Locks have been with us for quite some time now; longer than most people might tend to think. Therefore, the profession of the locksmith is amongst the most ancient occupations that are still alive and thriving today. The oldest lock currently known to modern man, found many years ago near Nineveh, is believed to have been made about four thousand years ago. And this is just the oldest one that we know about. What’s clear is that the need to provide protection to our structures and other properties has been with us since there early years of civilized man; this is certainly no less the case today.
A locksmith is more than someone you go seek out to make new keys. And there is more to it than the 24 hour locksmith who you call to get you into your house last at night after you realize you left your house key in the house. Locksmith solutions also include lock designs, and the design of other devices that will keeps doors shut and the property behind them safe.
Becoming a locksmith requires a certain amount of training. Locks, at least the very secure ones, tend to rather complicated mechanical devices. We might tend to think that because they are so commonly found and used that locks are simple to put together and design. Truth is that the first step to becoming a locksmith is to go through a training program. There are several to choose from and the Associated Locksmiths of America alone offers more than 100 such classes. Many of these classes are part of a larger certification process that most locksmiths will have to go through to become professionals at the craft.
The types of classes you will find on the path to certification include the ins and outs of safety codes and how locks factor into those codes, the machinery and tools of the trade, how to identifying duplicate keys and so on. There are even classes available to help students learn how to run and operate their own locksmith shops.
These classes will form the base or foundation of your certification process. And at the end of the process, you will have to pass a certification test. Bear in mind that not all of these classes can only be taken at proscribed places and times; many training classes are offered online as well.
Many times, people will be working on an apprentice level at a locksmith shop while they are working on completing their certification. This approach not only gives one real world experience about the craft of lock smithing, it also provides practical experience about how the ins and outs of a locksmith business.
After certification is achieved, many then go out to be locksmiths within an existing shop. Jobs are available with security companies, hotels, casinos, large apartment complexes, and maintenance companies that work for large buildings. Or, one can just go ahead and open his or her own shop.
