It is not an over statement to say that the Lock Smith trade is an ancient one. We do not know exactly how long there have locksmiths in the world, but we do know that it has been more than four thousand years (which is the estimated age of the oldest lock ever found). Just for perspective, Biblical times were about 2000 years ago. So it is a very old and very well established trade.
And for good reason. Theft has been with us for quite awhile as well.
As a member of the trade, lock smiths have a very important responsibility to the communities in which they practice their trade. The people who are protected by the locks are of course of primary importance, but protection of property kept behind closed doors is also important. So the locksmith helps to ensure the safety of the community and the property within it.
For this reason, it is a profession which is regulated via the requirement of licensing and certification in most locations around the country. In fact, even to be appreciate requires a special licenses in some locations. Whatever the level of expertise, professional locksmith services can only be lawfully provided by licensed locksmiths. And the certification processes that many of them must undertake are equally as important.
There are several different types of locksmiths, based on the types of services they specialize in, and how their business is operated. There are, for example, mobile locksmiths that operate only a mobile operation. These locksmiths always go to where the customer is, and they can help with a variety of lock-related needs. However, they are probably best known as the locksmiths who help customers get into their homes after they misplace their keys. While some companies operate only on a mobile basis, many have both a mobile service and a storefront as well.
Storefront operations are the most familiar to most people, perhaps. They help design locks for special needs in the home, create new keys for existing locks and so on.
There are also commercial lock smiths, which provide a wide range of services to office buildings, government facilities, educational institutions, apartment complexes, large retail establishments, etc. These locksmiths are very frequently the ones who have the greatest depth of experience with the most modern locking and security devices. They help to install, for example, keypad locks and biometric locks.
There are also locksmiths that specialize in automotive locksmith solutions. These, of course, are the folks who are called upon to solve lock issues on cars, and commercial vehicles.
The important thing to remember with any locksmith is that experience and education count for a great deal. There has been a good deal of innovation in the security and lock industries and it is important to work with people in the trade who are familiar with these new innovations. Those locksmiths who invest the time and resources in staying appraised of the latest technologies are going to be those in the profession best able to help customers decide from the many options.
